Some helpful hints to get you to St. John:

American Airlines flies into St. Thomas.  You will need a 4-wheel jeep/car on St. John to facilitate driving the hilly terrain.  I have found it easiest to rent a jeep at the Airport, drive to Red Hook (approximately 40 minutes from the airport, although with traffic, it can be @1 hour) and take the car/barge ferry from Red Hook over to St. John.  Be sure to check the barge ferry schedule to be sure your flight arrival time will make this possible.  The barge ferry costs @$40 per vehicle.  If you arrive too late in the afternoon, you will not be able to make the last ferry.  Another option is to take a bus or taxi from the airport to Red Hook, catch the passenger ferry to St. John and then rent your jeep in Cruz Bay, St. John.  There are many rental agencies but it is wise to reserve well in advance, as jeeps go fast!

Driving on the islands is fun, and curvy (and on the left side of the road).  You will come to enjoy the driving part of the experience.  The island of St. John has much to explore and it is easy to get around by car/jeep.  There are many bays to swim, hiking trails to hike, and shops/restaurants to enjoy.  It's friendly and hassel-free.  The Caribbean food is fresh and delicious.  As a US Territory, a passport is not required, but birth certificate is.                                                                                 Another helpful link:       http://www.usvitourism.vi

Water Musings

For those who love swimming, I recommend a book written by the longdistance swimmer Lynne Cox.  She describes her experience swimming with a lost baby whale off the California coast.  The story is poetic and inspiring and it's called GREYSON.  Lynne also has another book that details many of her longdistance swims, including her amazing swim in Antartica, called  SWIMMING TO ANTARTICA.  Happy reading!
